Recently we lost our sweet little kitty Farah, who slipped outside while I was taking the trash out. Here are the steps we took, many shared with us by those who have helped to bring lost pets home over the years.
- Take your flashlight in the morning before it is light and at night just after it grows dark and shine it into the bushes and even the trees. The light will reflect off is or her eyes.
- Walk your neighborhood and look in every nook and cranny. Even if you’ve already looked in the same spots, keep checking. Talk softly to your pet and if it is a cat, meow.
- Go door to door and show your cat or dog’s picture to your neighbors and ask them to contact you if they find him or her.
- Make brightly colored fliers that have a couple of photos of your pet, including his or her face. Include your address.
- Post your fliers throughout the neighborhood. Post online on neighborhood groups like Nextdoor and Facebook. Get the word out however you can.
- Call your local animal welfare agencies, humane society, and county animal agency/pound.
- Put some of your pet’s items like favorite toys outside. Also put out some items of your clothing or laundry to make your scent present.
- Leave your garage door open a crack, or in my case, I left my lanai door ajar.
- Put out food, treats and water.
- List on Paw Boost.
- Most importantly, never give up! I found my baby after two days in the same area I had been searching several times daily. I believe a neighbor had taken her and only let her go once they saw my signs and knew I was searching and would not stop.
